Welcome to Peaceful Mountain Horse Rescue, Inc., a New Jersey 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated in rescuing horses/ponies that have been abused, neglected, abandoned, or are unwanted and providing them with the care that they need and the love and attention that many have never known.  Although Peaceful Mountain is located in New Jersey, we take in horses and ponies from all over the country.  Some of our horses have come from Pennsylvania, New York, and as far away as North Dakota.

For those of you visiting for the first time feel free to click on the Our Mission button to learn exactly what we do, our adoption process, and our post-adoption requirements.  Our Rescue History page will explain how/why this rescue was started and you will also read about a very special horse, who will always be our inspiration and is the reason this rescue now exists.  Because of that very special horse, many horses that have been victims of abuse, neglect, and abandonment have been rescued and rehabilitated.  When donations and our spirits get down, we just think of him and it helps keep us going.

OUR NEWEST RESCUE

Meet Riley, an 8 year old quarter horse that arrived at Peaceful Mountain on July 3rd from Massachusetts.  The family that owned Riley rescued him 2 years ago from New Hampshire after learning that he was being fed peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and un-cooked macaroni and cheese because his owner couldn't afford to feed him properly.

Riley's current owners were hoping that he could go with their daughter to college this year, but they advised that Riley developed ringbone in his front, right leg and cannot be ridden, therefore, between the cost of college and taking care of Riley, financially it was going to be tough.

Because these owners were so wonderful in taking Riley out of his horrible living conditions, we wanted to help them.

Riley has been examined by our vet and received a clean bill of health.  His previous owners gave him his Spring vaccinations, and he has now received his West Nile vaccination, and we have begun his vaccination for bottulism, which every horse that comes to Peaceful Mountain receives.

Our farrier has examined Riley's hooves, and neither he nor our vet are totally convinced yet that Riley has ringbone.  Our farrier was  concerned that Riley's hooves weren't being trimmed correctly which, if it is ringbone, would just aggravate it even more.  Corrective trimming of Riley's hooves has already begun which, in a few months will better determine if he does have ringbone.  Even if it is ringbone, having Riley's hooves correctly trimmed should prevent any severe lameness from occurring.

Riley will be a resident of Peaceful Mountain for several months before he will become adoptable to allow him time to settle in and to also allow for additional corrective trimmings of his hooves so we can better determine if he has ringbone or not.  Once he becomes adoptable, Riley's adoption will be restricted to the northern/central New Jersey area because, along with our other adoption requirements, an additional condition for Riley will be that our farrier is to be used to trim his hooves.

Riley is a wonderful horse and was one of the easiest horses to ever enter into our herd.  Riley got along with all of the other horses and all of them accepted him immediately.  He has a very laid-back personality and just takes life in stride.

Riley is now in foster care and has fit into his new home very well.

Update on Giraffe

Giraffe has become a permanent resident of Peaceful Mountain Horse Rescue.  To let Giraffe spend the rest of her life in peace after all that she has been through, is the best gift we can give her.  For those of you who do not know Giraffe's story, her story is below.  For the many, many wonderful people who have written to us offering support and inquiring about Giraffe, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Giraffe is a beautiful leopard appaloosa mare and is approximately 16 years old.  Giraffe was one of the PMU mares.  For any woman out there that has ever used the hormone drug Premarin, you can thank this mare.  For those of you who do not know what a PMU mare is, it is a mare that is kept constantly pregnant and is forced to stand in a stall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 6 months out of her 11 month pregnancy while constantly hooked up to a machine that collects her urine because that is an ingredient of Premarin -
pregnant, mare urine.

Giraffe was approximately 4 years old when she became pregnant for the first time at the PMU farm she was at in North Dakota.  It wasn't until she lost her 6th baby, that the farm had no further use for her.  A horse rescue in New York took Giraffe.  Later on, she was given to the woman we took her from.  Although this woman owned Giraffe, and her pasture mate, Ser Khan, for 5-6 years, shortly after getting them, she became afraid of them and, therefore, spent very little time with them.  For a PMU mare that had received no TLC at the PMU farm, to go to a new home and again receive almost no attention was the worst thing that could have happened to Giraffe.

Giraffe and Ser Khan's owner fell into financial hardship and because of her financial circumstances, neither horse was given vaccinations for over 2 years, and their hooves were in very bad shape because they hadn't been trimmed in that 2 year timeframe either.

After acquiring Giraffe, we found her to be ear-shy, and a week after we took her in we found  long scars behind her ears which our vets advised looked like they came from a whip.

Giraffe's biggest issue is her trust in people and, given all that she has been through in her life, we don't blame her in the least.  Although we have made great progress with Giraffe in the year that she has been here and she now responds to us very well, she is still extremely shy and wary of anyone new who comes into the field.

Giraffe has definitely over-paid her debt to society, and we will make sure that she only knows peace, kindness, and loving care for the rest of her life.

If you would like to become a sponsor for Giraffe, please feel free to make a donation either by mailing a check, made payable to Peaceful Mountain Horse Rescue, Inc., or by clicking on the "Make a Donation" button to the left of your screen and following the instructions on making a donation online safely and securely through Paypal.

PET ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

We all have had a special pet/pets in our lives.  Whether they are no longer with us or are still sharing our lives, pets leave a mark on our hearts.  Pets are there for us during the good times and the really bad times.  Pets have that wonderful ability to make us laugh when we would rather cry, to pick us up when we are down.  Some of us have had a pet that was our inspiration, others have had a pet that they counted on when they felt all alone in the world.

Now, you have the opportunity to acknowledge your special pet.  For a donation of $25.00 or more, we will post your Pet Acknowledgement under the "Pet Acknowledgement" button on the left.

If you would like to make a Pet Acknowledgement on behalf of someone in your life, a parent, brother, sister, friend, etc., please feel free to do so.  We will send that person a card to let them know of your donation in their pet's name.

Your donation will not only give you the opportunity to acknowledge your special pet, but it will help us continue to rescue and rehabilitate horses and ponies that have been abused, neglected, and abandoned.

Click here to print the Pet Acknowledgement form.  Just complete and mail it back to us with your donation.  Checks should be
made payable to Peaceful Mountain Horse Rescue, Inc.

HOW YOU CAN HELP US HELP THE HORSES

Monetary donations are always needed and appreciated.  You can stretch your donation and help us even further if your employer has a Matching Gift Program.  That way your employer matches any donation you make.  Even if your company doesn't have a Matching Gift Program, see if he/she/they will be willing to match your donation.  Donations are tax-deductible, and we always provide a Contribution Receipt to our donors.

If your company will allow us to set up a booth in your lobby or cafeteria for a day for us to seek donations, please let us know by sending us an email to pmhr@earthlink.net

We can always use good, clean timothy grass hay.  If you can donate hay to us, please email us at pmhr@earthlink.net

We are also looking for a farm in Hunterdon or Warren County, New Jersey in order to expand our rescue.  If you or someone you know wishes to donate your farm to us, please call or email us.  Your donation would be tax-deductible.  We will also consider a long-term lease of a farm in Hunterdon or Warren County but for extremely, reasonable rent since we need every dollar from every donation to go to the care of our rescued horses.
